Magnificent Mysteries (Magnifici Misteri) is a hypnotic, wordless video that follows a series of figures from different times and places who briefly cross the same landscape.
The work draws on a true story from my family history: the kidnapping of Stella, a horse belonging to my grandparents’ family, by German soldiers during the Second World War. The story was reconstructed through the research of my uncles, Alessio and Dario, who followed the soldiers’ trail for nearly 100 kilometres, calling for the horse in vain.
Set against the backdrop of Italy in July 1944, when German troops moved through a country without a functioning government or army, the work connects a personal family memory with a wider history of violence, displacement and loss.
